Now if there ever a reason to sue someone for libel or defamation, it would be John Murtha:

A Marine Corps staff sergeant who led the squad accused of killing two dozen civilians in Haditha, Iraq, will file a lawsuit today in federal court in Washington claiming that Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) defamed him when the congressman made public comments about the incident earlier this year.

Attorneys for Frank D. Wuterich, 26, argue in court papers that Murtha tarnished the Marine’s reputation by telling news organizations in May that the Marine unit cracked after a roadside bomb killed one of its members and that the troops “killed innocent civilians in cold blood.” Murtha also said repeatedly that the incident was covered up.

In his remarks to the press, Ken Lay evoked God several times:

HOUSTON (Reuters) – Jurors ended day four of deliberations in the trial of former Enron chiefs Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling without reaching a verdict on Tuesday on whether the pair lied to cover up the company’s financial disarray.

Separately, a federal judge began weighing the evidence against Lay in a separate case for bank fraud.

“Now it’s in the hands of the judge, the hands of the jury and the hands of God,” Lay said outside court.

BREITBART – Former Enron Corp. chiefs Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were convicted Thursday of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud in a case born from one of the biggest business scandals in U.S. history.

The verdict put the blame for the demise of what was once the nation’s seventh-largest company squarely on its top two executives. It came in the sixth day of deliberations following a trial that lasted nearly four months.

Lay was also convicted of bank fraud and making false statements to banks in a separate trial related to his personal banking.

At a press conference earlier this afternoon Congressman William Jefferson (D-LA) vehemently denied that he has ever been bribed, citing that there is “two sides” to every issue. Jefferson, a long time congressman from the state of Louisana, is accused of taking at least $400,000 in bribes from an information technology company in return for government contracts. Jefferson’s congressional office was raided by the FBI yesterday. In a raid of his Louisana residence last month, the FBI found $90,000 in a freezer.

During Hurricane Katrina relief efforts Congressman Jefferson had two trucks, one helicopter, and several members of the national guard take a laptop, several suitcases, and a refridgerator type object out of his house.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday he believes journalists can be prosecuted for publishing classified information, citing an obligation to national security.

The nation’s top law enforcer also said the government will not hesitate to track telephone calls made by reporters as part of a criminal leak investigation, but officials would not do so routinely and randomly.

“There are some statutes on the book which, if you read the language carefully, would seem to indicate that that is a possibility,” Gonzales said, referring to prosecutions. “We have an obligation to enforce those laws. We have an obligation to ensure that our national security is protected.”

BREITBART: A federal jury decided Wednesday al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui deserves life in prison for his role in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, on Sept. 11, 2001.

On the seventh day of deliberation, the jury of nine men and three women informed Judge Leonie Brinkema that it had reached a decision. The verdict was announced at 4:30 p.m. EDT.

Moussaoui, a 37-year-old Frenchman of Moroccan descent, is the only person charged in this country in connection with the suicide jetliner hijackings that killed nearly 3,000 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field.

UPDATE: [Conservative] Bloggers are saying that Moussaoui would not become a martyr since he was not sentenced to death. I digress; either way, Moussaoui is going to die under US control. Either decision was fine with me, I do have to say I would have liked to see him be punished in the ultimate way, but 23 hours of staring at a wall for 50 years seems like the worst type of punishment.

Hot Air has a round up going on.

Stop the ACLU is a “little disappointed”.

Howard Kurtz on FOX New's bias

Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit, Eric Deggans of the St. Petersburg Times, and Steve Roberts of GW University appeared on CNN’s Reliable Sources this morning to discuss ABC’s undercover child molester report, Rush Limbaugh, Kaavya Viswanathan, the Harvard sophomore who is accused of plagiarism, and former LA Times blogger Michael Hiltzik.

On the subject of Rush Limbaugh, Reynolds called the charges “politically motivated”. I would also call the media’s reaction to the “arrest” politically motivated.

Eric Deggans said Rush got off light, citing others who have been caught with less got a harsh jail sentence. Perhaps that was because this was the second, third, or fourth time the culprit got caught with such drugs. Also, lets not forget Rush was using a LEGAL prescribed drug. Ironically, when the discussed went to Viswanathan, the plagiarist at Harvard, Deggans was very sympathetic for her.

On ABC’s This Week with host George Stephanopoulos, Senator John Kerry (D – MA) defended Mary McCarthy, the CIA agent fired for leaking classified information to the media.

Transcript via The Drudge Report:

ABC ‘THIS WEEKHOST GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: On another—on another front, excuse me, CIA official Mary McCarthy lost her job this week for disclosing classified information according to the CIA probably about a WASHINGTON POST story which reveal revealed the existence of secret prisons in Europe. A lot of different views. Senator Pat Roberts praised action but some former CIA officers described Mary McCarthy as a sacrificial lamb acting in the finest American tradition by revealing human rights violations. What’s your view?

SEN. KERRY: Well, I read that. I don’t know whether she did it or not so it’s hard to have a view on it. Here’s my fundamental view of this, that you have somebody being fired from the CIA for allegedly telling the truth, and you have no one fired from the white house for revealing a CIA agent in order to support a lie. That underscores what’s really wrong in Washington, DC Here.

STEPHANOPOULOS: That’s one issue of hypocrisy but should a CIA officer be able to make decisions on his or her—
KERRY: ... Of course not. Of course, not. A CIA agent has the obligation to uphold the law and clearly leaking is against the law, and nobody should leak. I don’t like leaking. But if you’re leaking to tell the truth, Americans are going to look at that, at least mitigate or think about what are the consequences that you, you know, put on that person. Obviously they’re not going to keep their job, but there are other larger issues here. You know, classification in Washington is a tool that is used to hide the truth from the American people. Daniel Patrick Moynihan was eloquent and forceful in always talking about how we needed to, you know, end this endless declassification that takes place in this city, and it has become a tool to hide the truth from Americans.

STEPHANOPOULOS: These—
SEN. KERRY: So I’m glad she told the truth but she’s going to obviously—if she did it, if she did it, suffer the consequences of breaking the law.

Where’s the coverage?

BREITBART – A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that Rep. Jim McDermott violated federal law by turning over an illegally taped telephone call to reporters nearly a decade ago.

In a 2-1 opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld a lower court ruling that McDermott violated the rights of House Majority Leader John Boehner, who was heard on the 1996 call involving former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The lower court had ordered McDermott to pay Boehner more than $700,000 for leaking the taped conversation. The figure includes $60,000 in damages and at least $600,000 in legal costs.

I’m eagerly waiting Oliver Willis to report this, or does he only do posts about the “Republican Culture of Corruption”?
