At a July 4th anti-war event, Cindy Sheehan called our troops rapists and war criminals:
We are here to declare independence from war and occupation and oppression. We are standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the American coalition, and Iraqis don’t have enough water to drink, who don’t have enough food to eat, who can get killed when they go to the marketplace to shop for their families, who can get raped by our soldiers just living, whose families can be killed. This war is a war crime and soldiers trying to survive are committing war crimes.
Lt. Col. Oliver North debated one of Sheehan’s anti-war, anti-American friends who didn’t denounce her after co-host Sean Hannity listed all of the things she has said about President Bush, including calling him a “son of a bitch” and the “fuhrer”.

You refer to the expression of “legitimate” dissenting opinion about the Iraq War as if Cindy Sheehan and other dissneters have been going around making reasoned arguments against the war. They have not been. They have been making extreme personal attacks and have never dealt on a reasoned basis with the serious issues involved. I could deal with an intelligently expressed and reasoned argument against the Iraq War, even though I think it would be wrong. My posts on this site have expressed why I think that the Iraq War and the removal of Saddam was the right decision. But the very real problem with the “dissent” to the Iraq War is that it is not done on a reasoned basis. Mostly it is rhetoric attempting to treat Iraq as Vietnam (from a left wing perspective), which I think is badly mistaken. Those who are attempting to treat Iraq as Vietnam are living in the past with warped views of that past, and they are condemned to perpetual misperception about the challenges facing us in the 21st century, including confronting the jihadist terrorists.
I wonder if you use the word “legitimate” to refer to Cindy Sheehan opposing the Iraq War based on her son dying in that conflict. If so, then I think you are misusing the word “legitimate” to give strength of argument and position to Cindy Sheehan’s “dissent.” Her personal situation, however, does not justify the left wing nutty statements that she has been making, and she is not entitled to immunity from counter-argument concerning the Iraq War. Also, you should concede that the gold star parents who strongly support the Iraq War and President Bush (and thay are the vast majority of such parents) are entitled to their opinion. And once you do, then it is the strength of reasoned argument that matters cincerning the Iraq War, not catchy phrases and personal attack.

As a recently returned Iraqi War vet, I can tell you that I was not “trying desperately to stay alive” – nor was I commiting any crimes. I spent the year I was in Iraq as part of a 10-man advisory team living with, training, teaching and fighting alongside Iraqi soldiers. I assure you it was we who where doing the hunting. Certainly the bad guys have weapons and are not going to lay down and quit – and they tried to kill us every day, but make no mistake, they were our prey. As for this nutcakes suggestion that the Iraqi people have no water or food – where does she get this info? The Iraqi economy is THRIVING! The markets are stocked with all kinds of foodstuffs and other items. The FACT is that the Iraqi people are eating better now then they have in decades – believe me, I have eaten with them….What planet does this woman live on?
