With ABC news reporting that Zarqawi is dead, and a major press conference in Iraq planned for the morning, there is a good chance that the son of a bitch might be dead. Yet the United States needs to stop acting like this is a one man show.Word is that the man was hated on the street, and a terrible leader. And we all know that much of the violence is not masterminded plots of terrorism. Instead it is the result of sectarian violence and general resistance.
Tomorrow morning the president will deliver his few lines and a smirk. And somehow he will manage to convince the talking heads that this is a turning point (along with Mission Accomplished, Saddam’s capture, Falujah, and voting). And all those people who had never heard of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi before FOX interrupted their news about a shark attack will let out a giant “yee haw.”
I don’t know how they do it, but they seem to find a way to hate America and Bush in every situation.

Father of beheaded man feels no relief over Zarqawi
Michael Berg, whose son Nick was beheaded in Iraq in 2004, said on Thursday he felt no sense of relief at the killing of the al Qaeda in Iraq leader blamed for his son’s death.

I can’t imagine why a father who lost his son to a murderer would actually feel “saddened” when the man who killed his son has finally been killed himself.
I would think that most surviving family members of victims of murder would REJOICE and feel a sense of relief and closure when the person who ended their loved-one’s life was finally “brought to justice,” courtesy of the United States military.

Great strawman arguments here. Can you read my thoughts? Ok so don’t claim to know what I think. I did not say “damn” or whatever when I saw the headline. I was glad he is dead. But do you expect me to throw a “Zarqawi is Dead” party? You think the death of one replacable leader who apparently couldn’t even operate a machine gun is going to have a large effect on the ground? I sure hope it does – however, that’s just not a realistic assesment. Zarqawi, as much as he is hyped in the media, is completely replacable and dispensible. Nevertheless, if he is indeed confirmed dead, it’s definitaly a good thing, no question about that. In the comming weeks we will see whether this death translates to any decrease in overall violence in Iraq.

Glad he’s dead, but most people are completely misunderstanding two things…
1. Sectarian violence is the major problem in Iraq, and this has nothing to do with Al Qaeda
2. The nature of Al Qaeda makes it possible for the entire operation to run independent of central leadership. Al Qaeda is NOT a close knit family of terrorists who plan large scale attacks together.
Zarqawi’s death, within Al Qaeda, will result in little more than one of his deputies moving up the chain of command, and probably ramping UP the violence from Al Qaeda in Iraq, just to prove a point.
I’m glad he’s gone, but let’s all keep things in perspective. Al Qaeda is like the Hydra, friends. Cut off one head, and two will grow back in its place.
