In a speech at the American Enterprise Institute, Karl Rove said the GOP is in a “sour time”, however will be “fine” the fall elections.
The Drudge Report provides a transcript:
QUESTION: It’s clear that the position that the administration’s in now is not where it would have liked to have been with a few months to go before the mid-term elections. I wonder if you could just say what has gone wrong and how do you turn things around before November.ROVE: Look, we’re in a sour time. I readily admit it.
I mean, being in the middle of a war where people turn on their television sets and see brave men and women dying is not something that makes people happy and optimistic and upbeat.
But I’m absolutely confident that—I heard this same kind of language about the 2004 elections in roughly the March, April, May, June period of June 2004.
We’re going to be just fine in the fall elections.
And we’re going to be fine because we stand for things that are important. We stand for strong natural defense abroad and complete victory in the war on terrorism which involves victory in Iraq.
We stand for a strong national defense. We stand for economic policies that are pro-growth, involving tax cuts and free trade. We are strongly for fiscal restraint in the budget process.
And our opponents, at this point, stand for little or nothing, except mere obstructionism. Whether it is the nomination of superbly qualified men and women to the judiciary, or our policies to reauthorize the Patriot Act to keep America safe in a time of global terror, the other party seems to stand for little except obstructionism.
And ultimately, the American people are a center-right country, who, presented with a center-right party with center-right candidates, will vote center-right.

howardd: Rove has not even been charged with exposing Plame’s name, let alone convicted of that offense, if there was any actual violation of the law in the first place. So, you betray your own ignorance and prejudice when you make such false assertions.
As a good liberal you accept accusations against any conservative or Republican as representing absolute proof of wrongdoing, and if someone is charged you presume guilt rather than innocence. Sad!

Another question he was asked and was not so forth coming with an answer
CORN: David Corn from “The Nation Magazine” on a different subject. Scott McClellan told the White House press corps, many who are here today, that he had spoken to you and you were not involved in the CIA leak. Can you explain why the American public, almost two and a half years later, hasn’t been given an explanation and don’t you think it deserves one for that misinformation because it does seem you were to some degree, though maybe disputed, involved in that leak?
ROVE: My attorney Mr. Luskin made a statement on April 26th. I refer to you that statement. I have nothing more to add to it. Nice try, though.

Did you defend Bill Clinton’s innocence until proven guilty when Republicans made a big deal out of Whitewater or accused Bill Clinton of killing Vince Foster?
Or the same of John Kerry when a bunch of people that didn’t even serve with him made swiftboat attacks?
On the other hand, I do think it’s kind of sweet that you jump to Karl Rove’s defense.

Federal Source to ABC News: We Know Who You’re Calling
A senior federal law enforcement official tells ABC News the government is tracking the phone numbers we (Brian Ross and Richard Esposito) call in an effort to root out confidential sources.
“It’s time for you to get some new cell phones, quick,” the source told us in an in-person conversation.
ABC News does not know how the government determined who we are calling, or whether our phone records were provided to the government as part of the recently-disclosed NSA collection of domestic phone calls.

And I guess the CIA leak about NSA wiretaps for suspected terrorists was not treason. That aside, do you have any real proof that the outing of valerie plame truly damaged national security. No you don’t you only have speculative proof, which does not hold up in court, although if you keep shouting things it might come true.
Frank, also you only have speculative proof about the stealing of elections, I guess when conservatives win, they must have stolen it, because there is no way anyone could think different than you and not want to vote your elitist way.

Rove, Bush the Republicans, and America are perfectly represented by the movie The Karate Kid 3. In the movie, Terry Silver (Rove-Bush combined) attempts to destroy Daniel LaRusso (the Americans) with lies and unethical behavior. LaRusso believes Silver’s lies because he does not have full information that proves him to be a liar (WMD). As a result, he practically destroys himself (Iraq War). At the end, Mr. Miyagi (the Democrats) recovers LaRusso and they defeat Silver and Mike Barnes (Tony Snow) at the tournament even though Barnes cheats and uses dirty tactics throughout the whole thing. Rest assured, the democrats will crane-kick the hell out of you right-wingers in 2006 and Hillary will do that kata thing in 2008.

First of all Wolfe,
The crane is the stupidest martial arts move ever, if you can get defeated by that then you deserve to lose. Its almost as bad as how Daniel wins the fight in the second movie by just twisting his body back and forth.
I guess what we see here is that by using stupid tactics thats how the dems hope to win. Unfortantly those moves can’t defeat any one with a brain.
(for the crane all you had to do was walk around it and nail the guy in the back, for the body twist in part 2 it was just sweep the guys feet out from under him, and i don’t remember how he wins in the 3rd one, it might have been a kata, which is only useful if your enemy is in the way of you performing the kata.)

I hope Rove is right. Kinda. Because I want the Republicans to win. Kinda.
It’s good that the Republicans have given us tax cuts to spur the economy, and installed judges who follow, rather than create the law. But is that enough for you? When my party is in power for so long, I expect ALL of it’s platform to become law.
By November, we need to be setting up oil rigs in ANWR, breaking ground on a security fence in Texas, and dramaticaly cutting non-military discretionary spending (say 3%?). If the Republicans we have in office right now can’t accomplish this, maybe it’s time to put some new blood into congress.
I’m not advocating voting Democrat, since that would crush the small gains we’ve seen in the last 6 years. But voting for non-incumbents in the primary may be a solution. It would at least send a small message. If Republicans aren’t going to do what we voted them into office to do, why are we voting for them again?
A lot of this lack of movement is the fault of Democrats threatening to filibuster. But it is also the fault of Republicans (Frist) not forcing them to actually filibuster, for weeks on end if need be. To me, it shows a lack of resolve.
Republican Senators, do your job, or let someone who will do it take your place.

Well well well, it looks like Chuck Norris here is trying to tell ME how it is. You should know that contact to the back is illegal and results in the loss of a point (you must be a republican to come up with that dirty tactic!). Barnes did it repeatedly to inflict his Rovian pain (stagnant wages). In part two, they were both kneeling while Daniel was doing the punches that finished off that guy (Bush the elder in 1992).

Analysts agree the only way the GOP can retain control of the House is by motivating their base.
All summer you’ll hear from the GOP that the moment Democrats regain control they will legalize gay marriage and marriage between man and beast. And they will give free abortions to all, and allow abortion up until the 8 1/2 month.

Is there any place that attempts to breakdown the conservative vote into groups such as the Christian right, fiscal conservatives, compassionate conservatives, etc?
Everyone I know would probably label themselves as fiscal conservative and no longer support Bush because of his out of control spending, the Iraq war, NSA spying, and immigration.
But I’m constantly told by my brother-in-law that it’s the Christian conservatives who are the majority and the reason Bush’s numbers are sinking is because of them. Any thoughts?

Is that the way conservatives feel – as long as you’re popular you can get away with breaking the law?

I don’t know if that is a good analogy. Bush isn’t at all popular anymore. Unless his approval rating goes up a lot, he’ll go down as the worst president in history.

Watching his speech (halfway through), he’s saying the same damned thing he has always said, except he’s going to put “up to” 6,000 troops on the border. 2 soldiers per mile of border may sound like enough to him, but to me it just makes clear that he isn’t taking this seriously. It’s more important to Bush to make it legal for illegals to come here than to just stop them. I just can’t understand it.

A May 15 Associated Press article by staff writer Tom Raum reported White House senior adviser Karl Rove’s assertion that President Bush’s favorability ratings “are far higher than his approval ratings,” even reaching “the 60s in some polls.” But an examination of recent polling shows that Bush personal approval ratings have, in fact, been in the 30s and 40s in 2006, not the 60s. Furthermore, the most recent poll to find Bush’s favorability rating at 60 percent or above was conducted in February 2005.
