Boring speech…I KNEW Bush was a liberal! He doesn’t want to do anything about this problem. The House Republicans are the ONLY ones obviously who know how to handle the problem.

I was pleased with the President’s very rational and reasoned approach to the situation.

There has been a lot of talk in the blogosphere, on cable TV, and talk radio that is just ridiculous. People that say we should grant amnesty to all, send all 11 million back; people call Republicans racists. I’m happy that Mr. Bush got on primetime TV to dispel this radical nonsense and lay out an outline of a comprehensive approach to this massive problem of immigration reform.

It’s unfortunate that the President doesn’t do this kind of thing more often. His address was effective in making clear his position on the issue, making clear that he’s not a lunatic, and making clear what Congress should be doing.

Furthermore, I think Bush just created a wonderful opportunity for reasonable Democrats and Republicans to work together to find a solution to this issue. Senator Durbin, in his response to the President’s address, failed to see this opportunity and instead opted more partisan blah-blah. It would be very disappointing if the rest of the Democrats failed to see the same opportunity.

I am a rock ribbed conservative and considering the complexities of the illegal immigration issue, the realities of the politics of hate in Washington, and realizing the need for reasonable action NOW, the President was very organized, detail oriented, diplomatic and he threaded the needle.

He emphasized border control as the top priority. He proposed a quick way to build up enforecment, with a longer term plan to make the necessary changes permanent. He proposed a way to force all illegals to register through a tamper proof identification card, he made sure that these criminals had to pay a penalty for their crime and back taxes, he made sure employers would pay for employing people without such a card, and yes he did provide for a long term amnesty plan under very strict conditions. All things considered, it was a magnificent effort.

The problem? The United States Congress will mess this up so bad through poor legislation it will bear little resemblance to what Bush proposed tonight, and while it will make me very angry, Bush will probably sign something much less than he proposed today which will means we will fail to deal effectively with this problem.

Good job George W.! Congress, we trust you to totally screw it up! America, it will never happen they way it was proposed tonight because of the politics of hate in Washington.

I sincerely think that including the FairTax as part of a comprehensive illegal immigration reform plan would be a good idea for the GOP. We can’t honestly expect to get rid of 12+ million illegal immigrants – it’s just not realistic. At least with the FairTax they would be paying for the roads, health care, and education that they use. And yes, I know that some are currently paying income taxes using fraudulent social security numbers, but there are many who live below the income tax radar.

    Howard,

It’s not the government’s job to cure our oil addiction. Just like it’s not their responsibility to cure you of an addiction to crack. Bush was only pointing out that we’re addicted in order to open a public dialog on the subject. Only free market forces can “cure” our addiction to oil. The government can help somewhat in the long term by funding alternative fuel technology research and allowing oil production within the US, but they cannot solve the problem.

Howard: I know you hate Bush, but you might want to think before you make such dumb comments.

Ask your favorite Liberal ambassador by the name of Bono about how much Bush has spent for AIDS funding. Bush has spent more money on that cause than any other US President, by a long shot.

Social Security reform? Why don’t you ask your favorite Liberals in Congress?

Don’t you remember that it was the DEMOCRATS who did everything they could to squash any idea of SS reform and had the gall to CHEER at the SOTU address when Bush mentioned that it had not been fixed?

And yes, we are addicted to oil.

Does anyone think this problem will be fixed overnight?

I didn’t know we were going to cure our “addiction for oil” in just four months, considering that Bush used that phrase in JANUARY of 2006 during his State of the Union speech!

What the Hell is the matter with him? Bush said four months ago that we are addicted to oil! How come he hasn’t solved our oil addiction problem yet?!

I guess the environmental groups bear no responsibility when they have Liberal members of Congress in their pockets and have halted any oil drilling or expansion of refineries in our OWN country for the last 30 years, instead of buying it from the Middle East.

    A trip to Mars?

I didn’t know we were supposed to be walking on Mars during Bush’s second-term.

In fact, he said he was seeking funding to have NASA send a man to the moon by the year 2020 and perhaps send a man to Mars after that.

Never let facts get in the way of your incoherent gibberish.

I think the speech was wrong from the beginning. The first sentence started with …”the reform of American’s Immigration System”.

The very first sentence should have been, “The failure of the US Government to enforce America’s Immigration Laws”.

So now the US Immigration System will be re-written because we can’t enforce the laws that have been previously set.

Very much like the current High School Completion requirements.

If the current laws are to inconvienant to enforce, then just change the laws to fix the problem.

A “let’s just start over” attitude.

When the US Government keeps changing the rules “mid-stream”, the illegal, legals and US citizens will not be able to plan out anything.

Before anyone meets the proposed 6-8 years, the rules will change again.

    gayrepublican,

If you think that the economic pressures of (relatively) free market pricing are one “the dumbest things” you’ve heard in a while then there isn’t much I can do to help you, but I’ll give it a brief try.

First, if you think that the government should arbitrarily set the price below the market price (price controls), then read this.

Second, if you think that the government can magically create more oil then I would like to sell you some oceanfront property in Arizona. Locating crude deposits, building production facilities, and getting those facilities online takes years (usually 5 to 10).

Those are only two variables in the equation: supply and demand. Supply is essentially fixed in the near term. Demand is relatively inelastic, but the high price of gas, we’ll use your $3.25 number, will force consumers to modify their consumption habits.

Furthermore, the high price that crude is fetching on the OPEN MARKET will spur oil companies to expand production facilities. But, again, that takes a few years. Provided demand does not keep rocketing up (no promises there), in a few years the price of crude will begin to recede.

Bottom line is that the government by design cannot set the price of gas. The market pressures of $3.25 per gallon gas will alter both variables in the supply and demand equation in such a way that the prices will be pressured to go down.
