Roll Call’s John McArdle was on Hardball this evening to discuss the details of Rep. Kennedy’s late night car accident. He says that Capitol police DID GIVE Rep. Kennedy special treatment. Kennedy WAS NOT given a field sobriety test, instead he was let go because he was “late to a vote”. The incident occurred at 2:45AM in the morning …

Hmmm, a wealthy and priviliged member of Congress receives special priviliged treatment for behavior that likely would land an ordinary citizen in jail.

Move along, nothing to see here.

This is crap, no matter which side of the fence you are on. Kennedy should have been given a sobriety test as a matter of police procedure. If certain people within the DC police determined that such a test was not necessary, THEY need to be investigated as to WHY they determined one wasn’t necessary.

Kennedy deserves all the bad publicity he gets over this, but so do the police who appear to have let him go.

I didnt know the senate was in session at 2:45 am, late to vote my ass. These lifer blowhards (both sides of the aisle) need to get spanked for their transgressions just as the rest of us would.

How about you agree to have a sobriety test when involved in a crash or you lose your senate seat. I know it would never happen but a guy can dream.

As I’ve said elsewhere, this looks really bad for the Capital Police.

Let’s call a spade a spade. Kennedy shouldn’t have the pull to get the Capital Police to impede an investigation… they have guns and radios, he doesn’t, and they should have “layed down the law”...

... unless they were ordered to back off because of his claim that he was going to a vote at 2:45 AM.

If there was no vote and he lied to the police, then I believe he is guilty of obstruction of justice: a felony.

[Besides Kennedy, t]here’s another pretty tawdry story that’s out there—one about members of Congress getting sauced up at rollicking parties and set up with hookers by crooked defense contractors in exchange help bagging pricey defense contracts.

That’s pretty salacious too. You’d expect the press to be all over it. As reported yesterday, the legendary Watergate Hotel has already received mulitple subpoenas from federal investigators investigating the hotel’s role in ‘Hookergate’. So this thing’s for real.

Yet, I’m not seeing any morning show’s running with it. [Silence from Expose the Left too. Hmm, if those filthy criminals were from, say the “Left” side of the aisle, don’t you s’ppose Ian Schwartz would be “Exposing” them? Just askin’.]

And, while the Kennedy story is ‘newsy’ it doesn’t really have any greater policy implications. And the public trust implications are minor. Wilkes-Watergate-Hooker story, on the other hand, is both. It’s salacious, which the press loves. And it’s also directly tied to crooks ripping off taxpayers, probably allowing our service members abroad to have shoddy equipment or defense dollars going to worthless projects.

So, we’re on the Kennedy case. But why the silence on the much bigger scandal bubbling up out of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee?

Kennedy says he was taking the drug Ambien and sleep-walking/sleep-driving. Two months ago the New York Times did a feature about this being an not uncommon side-effect of the drug. Kennedy admits he was wasted—he said he drove to the Capitol thinking he had to make a vote. He was clearly impaired and admitted as much. Maybe it’s the drug? Maybe he has a drug pronblem? I wonder what Rush Limbaugh thinks now.

Whether it was a stiff martini or really was the Ambien and/or the Phenergan (promethazine)that caused Kennedy to be unable to safely operate his motor vehicle he is still DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE.

A prsecription medication, legally prescribed and taken as prescribed, does not remove ones responsibility to not get into a DEADLY WEAPON when they are inpaired. He has admitted to being under the influence and the events leading up to the accident support he was unable to safely operate a motor vehicle.

He should be summoned to address these charges before a court.

Ray you are 100 percent correct. I have a friend who’s sister was involved in an accident and told the police she had taken Ambien. She wanted to clear any problems with it being alcohol related but was still arrested for DUI.

This is BULLSHIT that he get off without any arrest just because he is a political figure. They are NOT ABOVE THE LAW and should be treated as everyone would in the same scenario! ! !

However, I do beleive with all the attention regarding this situation something will be done eventually. At least I can hope. . .

Okay, just remember you heard it here first…

Kennedy is going to use the Ambien defense….

In the last few months there had been news features about the affect of Ambien of seleral people that had,”while sleeping; drove cars, mowed their lawns at 2am, had sex with their spouses”, and not had any recollection that the above events had transpired…

I simply do not remember getting out of bed, being pulled over by the police, or being cited for three driving infractions,” Kennedy said.

So, it was that nasty drug that caused this…

When he gets out of his “REHAB“, which will be a 2-4 week holiday, he will introduce a bill or some other form of legislation about the side effects of Ambien. He may even demand an FDA review of the meidcation…
