Howard Kurtz on FOX New's bias

JUAN WILLIAMS: Well I’m glad to hear that you saying if you know that inventories are high this week, so that you understand there is no reason for the prices to keep going up except some kind of gouging or exploitation here by oil companies. I mean, I’m glad to hear finally turned around because of supply and demand, there are certain rules we should obey in the country. But if you look at the profits this week, profits are soaring through the roof. 50% rise in profits for these oil companies.

WILLIAM KRISTOL: What were Exxon-Mobil’s profits up?

WILLIAMS: Uhhh, I think Exxon-Mobil was—
KRISTOL:—7 percent. Their sales were up 8 percent. Is that price gouging? Sales up 8 percent, profits up 7 percent.

WILLIAMS: [speechless] Yeah. It seems to me that there is no basis at this point for explaining this, except that there is some corruption and the corruption comes from people who are speculating and pushing prices up unnecessarily and I think hurting the economy. And by the way, hurting President Bush.

With apologies to the original Saturday Night Live there are times when I watch Fox News Sunday I find myself yelling at the TV,

    “Juan, you ignorant slut.”

There is a conspiracy to keep oil and gas prices high:

    1. The Democrats conspired with the Environmental Lobby to keep us from drilling in Anwar and elsewhereu, which would by now have reduced or dependence on foreign oil.

    2. The Democrats conspired with the Agriculture Lobby to keep oil and gas prices high so the farmers could sell corn and other products for ethanol.

    3. The Democrats conspired against every proposal of the Bush Administration to keep him from cutting off our dependence on foreign oil.

If the Democrats get their way and either tax so-called windfall profits or cut government subsidies to the oil industry for alternative fuels exploration, the oil companies will not lose a dime. Increase their taxes – they increase their per gallon prices for oil and gas. Cut the government subsidies as Hillary wants, and the oil companies will say to hell with exploring alternative energy sources. So, it will cost the tax payer just as much money or more, only from different pockets.

One last note: The oil and gas industry has not been convicted of price gouging, and their percentage of profits is very modest compared to other American industries. Did these companies make a lot more in gross dollars in profits, yes, undeniable. But, I challenge anyone to prove it was either immoral, illegal or unethical. But the way, I hate paying these high gas prices!

Wow, is it 2015 already? I was under the impression that we wouldn’t see a drop of oil from ANWR for another 10 years if we had opened it in 2000, which we didn’t. So more like 2020, actually. Where does the time go?

Um… aren’t the Democrats in the minority? How’d they manage to do this with no Republican support? How did this stuff even get out of committee? You really ought to notify Hastert and Frist about this. Bush, too – who’s been signing this stuff into law?

It’s so funny, the wingnuts are so stubborn, that when gas prices are so high that it actually affects them, they still persist in defending this administration! According to the wingnut scriptures, we should just keep doing what Dear Decider says, and drill in ANWR so we can get an extra 215 days of oil!

I love the new ‘Decider’ name for Bush, although you could at least give credit to the recent protestor who first coined it.

Im still waiting for the dems to make a realistic plan for dealing with the high oil prices, something really bright such as federalizing the entire industry.

Maybe when the dhimmicrats discover that oil is a global commodity that everyone wants, then they will figure it out. More demand means higher prices for a limited supply.

Quick question for you, when was the last U.S. refinery built? When was the last one put out of action? Damn those pesky hurricanes.

Democrats fault? Really? Couldn’t be that Bush gave the oil industry free reign to rape us by giving them 2 billion in breaks and no regulations.

What about all that oil we were supposed to get from Iraq to defray the cost of the war? Opps, didn’t count on insurgents, did ya? Failure after failure from this incompetent and arrogant administration.

Bush, Cheny and Condi are oil people (Condi had a Chevron oil tanker named after her). Don’t you think they know what’s going on?

No, we didnt count on the insurgent activity as much as we should have, just as we didnt count on the Germans counterattacking in the Ardennes. Funny thing war, its never been an exact science.

Was Bush the guy (in power for a whole five years) who refused to build any additional refineries?

Was Bush the guy who caused almost the entire LA coastal oil industry to shut down after Katrina hit?

Was Bush the guy who decided that China and India should embark on a rampant modernization campaign that would demand more energy?

Good grief, its like talking chaos theory with five year olds. When will you morons figure out that oil demand around the world is rising? When will you figure out that a crazy man is president of the worlds second largest oil supplier?

When will you realize that oil is a commodity like grain or coal or iron-ore, and therefore is subject to economic strictures? Its the ECONOMY, ‘toopid, and low gas prices are not a right.

crusader: I know this is hard for you, but I’ll try and keep it simple. Just having Anwar in development, as well as offshore drilling, some domestic drilling, alternative energy sources and resrearch would have a positive impact on oil and gas prices. While I have little if any respect for the oil producing Arab governments in the Middle East, even they are smart enough to know that keeping their prices low enough to discourage further exploration by our country and our work towards independence from Middle east Oil would be in their best interests. So, it was in that context I mentioned Anwar.

Beyond those comments, I refer you back to posts #7 and #10, as Yen made the case quite effectively.

“dhimmicrats”. That’s interesting. It’s the democrats who are serious about reducing our dependence on foreign oil. When Dear Decider takes a walk literally hand in hand with the King of Saudi Arabia to talk “business”, it’s clear who the real dhimmi is. Face it, you wingnuts really don’t give a shit about “reality” (the necessity of REAL reduction in dependence on Middle Eastern oil), you’re only concerned with being right.

Please tell me what you did during your eight year stint in office to reduce our dependence on foreign oil….......nothing!

And I never heard a word of it during the DNC convention.

At least the president announced a plan, whether you like it or not. Considering the fact that we get about 26% of our oil from the middle east, finding other sources would be a positive. I don’t care about being right, I would just love one day to tell the countries of the middle east, sorry we no longer need your oil, so go F#$K yourselves.

At least you guys have conceded that the evil Democrat conspiracy isn’t really behind this. Since, um, everything that passes through Congress does so with Republican approval. Here’s a great anecdote for you.

Most Republicans, constrained by an ideological resistance to federal regulation, have always opposed tougher mandates. But achieving better fuel economy was once a passion of Democrats. In 1990, 42 of the Senate’s 55 Democrats — about three-fourths — voted to require automakers to reach 40 mpg by 2001. That bill drew 57 votes overall, but failed amid opposition from President George H.W. Bush and a Republican-led filibuster.

A Republican-led filibuster! Gee, DKM, maybe that has something to do with why “we” didn’t touch this issue again.

You tried it once and gave up, what kind of conviction is that. What technology was available back then to reach those goals, and is that for cars and trucks? I don’t want the auto manufactures to make the car I drive unsafe by making the cars lighter in order to get better fuel mileage.

You still can’t tell me why the DNC never brought this up until Gas prices went up. In 16 years, you mean to tell me that the DNC has been silent on better fuel standards.

The Fact is that both sides like the taxes collected from higher fuel costs.

I mean I ussed to have some kinda of respect for your opinion but to let some of the crap fly out of there when republicans and bush are twiddling their thumbs while the USA hits one crisis after another is pathetic.

Save your page long replys, you already said enough.

The Leak: Actually, whenever I think of the Republican controlled Congress the word that comes to mind is “feckless,” they are either unable or unwilling to take positive action based on their core beliefs.

Nonetheless, it was several decades of Democrat policies and their resistance to domestic oil exploration that have brought us to this point. On the other hand, the Republicans haven’t done a damn thing, they haven’t been able to work together to produce effective legislation to deal with this problem and many others.

I am not a Republican, I am a Reagan conservative and I am certainly not happy with the Republican controlled Congress. On the other hand, things are even worse when the democrats are in control. Neither party is worth a tinkers damn anymore.
