Howard Dean was on Hardball tonight and was asked how he felt about the Star Spangled banner being sung in Spanish. Dean of course made it into a racist Republican issue, but then said that Canadians sing their anthem in French AND English. Ugh, it’s their official languages, STUPID!

Perhaps there is no right to tell people what language to sing the anthem in; however, there is such a thing as decorum.

You would think that with all the battling over the immigration issue, the mexicans would be smarter than to co-opt the anthem. Just a thought, considering what they are trying to achieve.

Puerto Rico, where the predominant language is Spanish, has been part of the U.S. since 1898. Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917.

I suppose the Right thinks the four million natural born U.S. citizens there should be forced to sing the national anthem in English.

This is what happens in Europe, when the incoming population doesn’t want to learn and use the language everyone around them is using. It just leads to strife, misunderstanding, and violence.

Didn’t anyone watch the movie Crash???

Well I have a better idea….just round up all of them who have Mexican parents and send them back with what they came here with. If they don’t go willingly, you shoot the son of a bitches until they do leave. They should have a heat detector at the border and if anything shows up above 98.6 degrees the vehicle is held until everything is cleared. Easier to solve the problem, if your parents are Mexican and you are born here, you still are Mexican because your folks did not come here legally and if the Democrats don’t like it. Revoke their citizenship and send them with them.

If you recall, Canada has been threatened over and over again by French speaking Canadians, with the Provinces being dominated by them seceding from Canada. Whenever a nation speaks more than one language in the conduct of its affairs, domestic or international, they cease communicating at all.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” No liberals, that was not Lincoln, it was Jesus giving us this Divine, eternal Truth.

We have too long accommodated foreign speaking individuals in our ballots and in virtually every area of public life. In California we have our ballots in many, many languages. So one must ask, how can these people be citizens and have the right to vote while not being able to communicate in the language of this nation (English). Because the Democrats know that by promising these people a free ride and no responsibilities to the country, they can in effect buy their votes and have the political power they crave to turn America into a socialist state.

But, Jesus was right! When we become a divided nation, encouraging citizenship in multiple languages, promoting multi-culturalism and not demanding a uniform language, we will surely fall as a great nation and become, at best, a failed third world country. We are now a house divided and the liberals and Democrats want it that way; but they and we will pay the price in our fall from global prominence and power because of their hubris and folly!

Neal – English may not be our “official” language, but it is our “functional” language. Since America is a multi-national state rather than an ethnic state, we must use other factors to unify us. Language is one of those factors.

The alternative is to allow us to become, in the words of Pat Buchanan, a “polyglot boardinghouse”.

I’ll bet that Eastern European nation your forebears came from only had one functional language (unless they’re from Yugoslavia, and we all know what happened there).

That’s right Dean. And last I heard doesn’t West Canada despise the East and want to break away and be its own country, or is that just Quebec? I guess so, thanks Umnumzana.

Sure I think they should learn English in order to properly assimilate into an English speaking country. But after what happened before with them waving their Mexican flags like the coutry they fled from was better, and so long as they don’t change the words or insult the song or its meaning, for now I am just happy (and you guys should be too) that they weren’t singing the Mexican national anthem instead.

Zim: Were they really waving Mexican flags while singing The Star Spangled Banner? My connection was running slow so I could not download the video.

JLW: Don’t singers do that as well when singing it at openings of sporting events? No one has sung it properly for decades. Why doesn’t anyone ever cry out over them for changing the way it is supposed to be sung? You have singers annoyingly over-extending/over-dramatizing notes in the song, and even altering the song’s rhythm. No offense to R&B listeners, but they alter the song the most, and not for the better.

For now lets just be happy it was our song and not Mexico’s they were singing (baby steps). If it were Mexico’s, that would be really messed up.

Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, In full glory reflected now shines on the stream: ‘Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a country should leave us no more? Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just, And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.” And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Here in Canada although there is a French and English version of the song:

    – the English sing the English version,
    – the French sing the French version (unless they’re separatists in which case they refuse to sing it)
    – The english usually don’t know the French version and the French don’t know the English version.
    – the government uses a version which mixes the two
    – if you’re in a crowd of mixed French/English speakers and you have to sing the anthem it gets really mixed up because the person next to you is singing different words which causes people to lose their synch and it sounds like crap
    – while the two versions of the song are similar in “spirit” however, the part that is emphasised twice in English is:

“We stand on Guard for thee”

    While in French its (translated:

    “protect out homes and rights”

As you can see the English version reflects a “What can I do for my country?” attitude, while the French one is “what can my country do for me?”.

    – lastly, because the government sees the anthem as being a politically correct issue they change the official words every 10 years or so which has resulted in dozens of different versions of the song.

Currently, some senators and members of the recently defeated government are trying to remove the references to God and to make it “gender neutral”.

Instead of the anthem being seen as a part of our heritage that unites us its being turned into a tool for social manipulation to propagandize the politically correct edict of the socialist (until recently) government.

Is this what you Americans really want?

    Nice comment Cool Blue

Fellow bloggers, I am a conservative and I am directly apologizing. I was wrong; the Spanish version of our National Anthem did have changed lyrics that unrightfully bashed our country. This is atrocious. I finally listened to it, could translate some of it, and had confirmed by both radio and TV news today that the lyrics were changed.

And these ILLEGAL immigrants wonder why we don’t want them here. Who would invite someone into their own home knowing that person would do nothing but demand charity and respect from you instead of earning it? How rude. I am all for letting people flee an impoverished, corrupt country to find a better life here, but don’t come here with entitlement mentalities and start demanding things, and demanding that we change to accommodate you. It is the immigrant who must adapt and assimilate to their new country, not the other way around.

But I still stand by my comment regarding most R&B (and some other) singers. Please stop trying to spice up the song and just sing it.

Cool Blue: nice summation of the Canadian situation – you didn’t mention that the French words have never been meddled with in the way the English words have. The French version still has all the “under the protection of the Holy Cross” stuff and so on.

And the French version preceded the English, written by a Quebec composer.

Further PC meddling will no doubt banish the third verse (which you never hear anyway):

O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies
May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise,

And I think the second verse ought to be the first :
O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.

    Michelle Malkin:

You’re an idiot. Go hang yourself, you racist pig.

While you’re at it, go send the real Michelle some of that moronic hate mail instead of just hiding and cowering behind a username. Maybe she’ll even put your name on her website for all of us to see.

Malkin is definitely doing something right if she enrages idiots like you enough to engage in such hate mongering.

I put you in the same category as the nutjob religious cult (that Ian posted last week) who protests at the funerals of our fallen servicemen.

Michelle Malkin: Don’t you just love twisted losers who impersonate others? Particularly when they do or say stupid or bad things as if we would fall for it thinking it really was Michelle Malkin. WTF? If you are so good and righteous why don’t you use your own, real screen name? Liberals like you make me more and more proud everyday of my decision to cross the tracks to the common sense, conservatism side.

Zim: Here are some examples of immigrants demanding that the West bow down and change to accommodate them: Muslims demanded thru threats, protests, and violence (including deaths) across the world, even vandalizing a news paper building in our own country (I think Arizona) because of the Muhammad cartoons (nice double standard). Killing directors who produce documentaries based on first hand experiences of Islamic oppression of women and moderates. A Muslim also refused in Florida to get their photo ID taken without their faces covered. And in England a lot of workplaces, including a chain of banks, had to ban all images, toys, paraphernalia representing a pig because someone (gues what religion) was offended (this included a Piglet (remember Winnie the Pooh?) Kleenex box cover). They even banned the image of the piggy bank.

Some illegal and legal immigrants (mostly Spanish speaking) refusing to learn English and demanding that our public schools get Spanish speaking teachers (and politicians falling for it). Come on!

And I don’t disagree with them singing it in Spanish. I completely disagree with them changing the words (which they did), in any way, especially to diss the U.S., the country that they supposedly fled to for a better life.

If anything we need to start concentrating on Mexico more since it is in our back yard, and get them or help them uncorrupt themselves and close that poverty-to-rich gap that is 100X larger than ours. Maybe then proud Mexicans can have a country to really be proud of and not have to flee just to find work, or welfare/medical care. Helping them fix their problem will ultimately help fix ours. But that is a long term solution, and no one wanting a re-election will dare to try it because the results will not be immediate, and will actually require work.

The North Mexican National Anthem. (Includes audio from The BJ Ellis Show.)...

Why are people so surprised that advocates for illegal immigration wrote an anthem for themselves? As many Conservatives like myself have been pointing out this is an invasion. Any group that wants to sieze territory, change a nation’s borders…

Zim: By the way. I am sure I am not alone on this one. I forgot to mention, I am under the impression that a lot of these illegal immigrants are demanding citizenship and access to our welfare/social programs. Just like that. Job or no job, legal or not. This is also wrong. The reason our social and welfare programs were made for us citizens is because it would be impossible to take care of the entire world. No tax hike by dems or libs or tax cut by republicans to fuel the economy and yield higher tax revenue (which it did) will be able to afford that.

If you have a family you are naturally going to take care of your family first and not give all of your money to your neighbor. Sure, help him out here and there when you can, but not to the point that it hurts your family. As a provider, your family comes first. You cannot screw over your own family. And our leaders should not screw us, their own people or one huge family. They need to take care of the U.S. first and not everyone else.

Immigrants need to stop coming here and accusing us of not taking care of them or treating them fairly just because they can’t even find work in their own country. Why aren’t they addressing the problems in the country they fled from? Instead the U.S is always shed as the bad guy. If we are so bad then why did they flee to come here, risking their lives in the process in many cases?

If they want citizenship they have to earn it. It is not hard. Learn English so they can assimilate better, be able to hold down a job to prove they won’t be just another burden on our social programs nor a statistic in our crime rates, and pay taxes like the rest of us. It is not asking for much. If they want to be treated fairly, there you go.

We had these laws and regulations for a reason. Notice Mexico has a law illegalizing and jailing immigrants just for working in Mexico. I love how a lot of people are oblivious to the real bad guys. Mexico’s economy and corruption is the problem, not America.

Like JWL said, theyre taking the National Anthem and changing the words and music.

It’s NOT the Anthem, it’s a parody of sorts being used as a call to protest by illegals. And notice that they even changed the title to “Nuestro Himno” (“Our Hymn/Anthem”).

If you want a Spanish verison of the Anthem, it’s been in the Library of Congress since 1919. http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cocoon/ihas/loc.natlib.ihas.100000007/default.html and properly entitled “La Bandera de las Estrellas”

“Nuestro Himno” is nothing but a bastardized version of the Anthem being used by non-citizens for political purposes and it should be condemned.

I am so sick and tired of these non-Americans (like Zim – whoever the hell he is), that think they should be allowed to come in here and change everything to suit themselves. This is America – we speak English, the National Anthem is spoken in English, it has the same lyrics it has had for the last 150 years – we are not going to change that to suit you. If you want to be here, do it legally, become American, and speak our language. What’s the saying, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.” If you don’t like it, let me help you with the door. I too am sick to death and tired of working my butt to the bone while all these illegal aliens come in here and live off my tax dollar. Don’t worry – we’re boycotting the boycott – I think I’ll go buy some Taco Bell today.

The song in question is not our national anthem sung in Spanish. Get that straight. It is a Spanish language song set to the melody of our national anthem and represents many things. The song actually not very good musically in either language and is clearly insulting to America and Americans.

Americans are completely justified to view the attempted takeover of our national anthem as symbolic of a larger effort to take over our culture, violate our sovereignty, and illegally and immorally alter the destiny of their nation.

This is not about bashing legal immigrants. I support them with wide open arms as do the vast majority of American citizens. Almost all of us have ancestors that immigrated here from somewhere else. As do most nations of the world. But that is not the issue is it? The issue is about those who choose to violate our law and sovereign borders. Whether they are good or not is not the issue either. Theodore Roosevelt who once started a speech to the Daughters of the American Revolution with the phrase “Fellow immigrants” said this – I think he has it right:

“In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag…We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language…and we have room for but one soul [sic] loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

He sums up the feeling of most Americans on the subject. The true desired to be an “American and nothing but an American” is what we require of immigrants. Nothing more and nothing less.

I think the above statement from Roosevelt should be put on the front page of every blog and web page that supports American citizens efforts to stop the illegal and immoral changing of our nation by force of illegal immigration.

Also: The best way to deal with the troll calling itself “Michelle Malkin” is to ignore it completely. Do not respond to it as that will force it’s two brain cells to slog into action and start typing incoherent rubbish at you. It’s writing reveals it’s sad state of being and by ignoring it forces it to sink even further into the depths of its sickness. Left alone it will soon cease being a factor. Those things can’t live with themselves for long once they stop getting responses they crave.

Why was it that when my grandparents came over from Italy, along with hundreds of thousands of other Italians, Irishmen, Germans, etc… that they were required to learn English, respect and learn the Anthem in English? Why do todays’ illegals feel they are entitled to something my grandparents were not, and never felt the inclination to have??
