Senator Dick Durbin (D – IL) appeared on Your World with Neal Cavuto yesterday afternoon to discuss the gas price issue. Durbin blames all of the problems on President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and the profits of the oil companies. Cavuto, however, contends that the outrageous taxes put on gas by the government (i.e. THE SENATE!) have caused the price of gas to sky rocket.

Durbin suggested that President Bush and the government, an entity the Senator serves, come up with a plan for alternative fuels to solve the problem. However, Cavuto wanted to know what’s wrong with obtaining oil domestically, rather than buy it from Islamic countries. Cavuto says he doesn’t want to because of the “environment”, even though there is oil available in the Gulf coast, ANWR, and shale available in the Wyoming area of the country.

This is a must (whoops!) see interview that turns into a heated battle.

DURBIN is seen for the LIB TOTAL JackAss He Is

Cavuto pummels Durbin with facts, Durbin hates to be confused by facts. Durbin just spouts and spews the Liberal mantra on “Big Oil”...he has no solutions only leftist rhetoric…

When you emphasized “THE SENATE!” as the source of the gas problem. You really should have emphasized, “THE REPUBLICAN SENATE”. Ya know, because they hold the majority and all.

    What doublespeak nonsense from Durbin.

On one hand he says we told the Republicans we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 40%. On the other hand he says ANWR and off-shore drilling are off limits for environmental reasons.

Excuse me, my head is about to explode from listening to this monumental stupidity.

The tax increases do suck, but the bottom line is supply-demand laws. Like Cavuto pointed out, with emerging economies in two of the largest countries in the world, with limited refinery capacity being hit by hurricanes in the Golf, with violence in the mid east threatening the supplies of most of the world… duh, we’re gonna see a price hike.

I was skeptical of that $0.09 per gallon profit cited as well… I’m gonna look into that.

Durbin wants to tax the oil companies for what, making money? That doesn’t sound correct to me. If I was Exxon, and as an oil company, if I were to be taxed further for making money, I would be furious! They can’t do that, it isn’t fair to the person making fair profits. That’s destroying out freedom of capitalism. Besides, if you really feel that oil companies are making too much money and gouging, as to what the wrongly some would call “unfair”, spend your money else where then. Instead you could use that money for a ridiculously expensive and cheaply made hybrid, a bicycle, or a scooter. You vote with your money; expensive gas or an expensive hybrid. And if everyone were to go that path,—purchasing an expensive hybrid—Toyota would become even wealthier,—then Durbin will want to tax them for profiting largely—surely another competitor will come on the market to sell oil lower. If Durbin understood the philosophy of the country he is serving for politically, then maybe a Democrat would get something done in the Senate once in a while.

Record profit is recor profit, no matter if you make it $100 at a time or 0.09 cents at a time. No one seems to care that these record profits are helped by ENORMOUS incentives and tax breakes given to big oil. Jokes on you American tax payer! I would agree with Keith that corporate welfare should end period, but particularly when the company is OBVIOUSLY doing fine on it’s own. Out of curiousity, before hurling accusations, does anyone know how much money Exxon received this past year in government bones?

That $400 million was also provided to the CEO by the stockholders of the company. It’s not like he just took whatever he could get his hands on. If the stockholders didn’t think he was worth that much in retirement, they wouldn’t have given it to him. Obviously they thought otherwise. Maybe it had something to do with Exxon’s record return over the last 12 years of 500%.

Durbin does come across as a total ignorant asshole.

For what it’s worth guys, here’s an energy plan:

    • Drill for more oil. Supply is good. Drill in ANWR, the Gulf of Mexico, Wyoming, and wherever oil is found.
    • Use less oil. Use tax credits to encourage more endly efficient vehicles, home lighting solutions, etc.
    • Go nuclear… and no, I don’t mean Iran, although that may be necessary too. Build a few power plants. Learn from the French.
    • Tell Ted Kennedy and John Kerry to take a hike and build some windmill farms.
    • One word: refineries.
    • You don’t need 14-friggin blends of gas (13 in the continental US). That drives up the price by complicating distribution and interfering with supply and demand by adding “friction” so relax by those standards by executive order.
    • Next time you invade a country and are accused of doing it for oil, actually take the oil. (I’m just kidding… do the right thing and help the country rebuild, as you’re doing in Iraq and our forces are helping you do in Afghanistan… and God bless / let’s all send our secular good wishes to the men and women working so hard for our freedom and safety and for the good people who desire to be free… and unraped and tortured by the state… in those countries.)

Ann Coulter has a great article about this up.

    My favourite part?

Democratic House Speaker Tom Foley endorsed the proposal on “Charlie Rose,” saying: “I’d have a five-cent increase every year for five years … But that’s not going to happen … because we’ve got people who fret and worry that one- or two-tenths of a cent of a gasoline tax is going to cause some revolution at home.” So in Tom Foley’s universe, two-tenths of a cent is the same as a quarter – another testimonial to the American public educational system.

Big problem is lack of supply (partly due to Democrat policies… like no new refineries, no new production… I mean, what do they expect?) and increased demand (China, India).

So, supply is restricted while demand is increasing… guess what… the law of supply and demand (a far truer and more universal law than any written by man) indicates prices go up… which reduces demand, keeping them in line.

Otherwise, you run out of oil and gas.

It’s a good example of why nothing is getting done, and nothing is going to get done about this. The biggest problem, really, is supply and demand, and whether you like it or not, that’s a market issue and one the government can’t really do a lot about, but even within the things that can be controlled, there is more interest in blaming the other party for the problem than in addressing what to do now. Anyway, I don’t care if they are taxed 50 cents a gallon and get 9 cents per gallon for profit. Something is wrong when a country is in an “oil crisis” and an company can make record profits. If a country is in that sort of situation, the profits of the company should report the same. Their may be a bit of a boost due to the increased demand, but setting a record for highest quarterly profits during an “oil shortage” is just outragous.

Also, they received that $400 million to give the retiring CEO through their profits, likely over the past decade.

Also a price ceiling will cause a shortage.

Anyways, on the subject of $400 million, yes it is stupid that he got that much, however that is what the company was willing to pay him. Would anyone on this board say “no give me less money”, i think not.

Gas tax has ALWAYS exceeded oil company profits, which means the gov’t makes almost twice as much profit as oil companies. The gov’t should lower the tax prices on gas, but they won’t.

The Democrats want windfall tax profits to penalize the oil companies.. This might sound great, but just remember, those taxes will be passed along to the consumer, and gas prices WILL GO HIGHER.. IT WILL NOT LOSER THE PRICE OF GAS, and the GOV’T WILL ONLY MAKE MORE OF A PROFIT!!.IT’S THE GOVERNMENT THAT’S DOING THE TAX GOUGING, NOT THE OIL COMPANIES!!

Just to give you some information about how much gas taxes are and WERE previously…

Source: American Petroleum Institute, Tax Foundation.

Today, the combined burden of federal, state and local gas taxes costs American drivers an average of 45.9 cents on every gallon purchased. As Figure 2 illustrates, in some states the combined taxes exceed 60 cents for every gallon purchased. According to data on gasoline use from the U.S. Department of Transportation, that amounts to an annual gas tax burden of roughly $271 for every man, woman and child in the United States. In these times of concern over high gas prices, American consumers should remember that gasoline taxes have a significant impact on the amount they spend at the pump.
