Senator Dick Durbin (D – IL) appeared on Your World with Neal Cavuto yesterday afternoon to discuss the gas price issue. Durbin blames all of the problems on President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and the profits of the oil companies. Cavuto, however, contends that the outrageous taxes put on gas by the government (i.e. THE SENATE!) have caused the price of gas to sky rocket.
Durbin suggested that President Bush and the government, an entity the Senator serves, come up with a plan for alternative fuels to solve the problem. However, Cavuto wanted to know what’s wrong with obtaining oil domestically, rather than buy it from Islamic countries. Cavuto says he doesn’t want to because of the “environment”, even though there is oil available in the Gulf coast, ANWR, and shale available in the Wyoming area of the country.
This is a must (whoops!) see interview that turns into a heated battle.

DURBIN is seen for the LIB TOTAL JackAss He Is
Cavuto pummels Durbin with facts, Durbin hates to be confused by facts. Durbin just spouts and spews the Liberal mantra on “Big Oil”...he has no solutions only leftist rhetoric…
3:56 pm [ Quote ]
When you emphasized “THE SENATE!” as the source of the gas problem. You really should have emphasized, “THE REPUBLICAN SENATE”. Ya know, because they hold the majority and all.
3:58 pm [ Quote ]
You would be right if I was talking about this current Senate and not Durbin’s career.
But alas you’re a liberal and we can’t count on you being right on much.
4:14 pm [ Quote ]
I love to see a liberal actually get some tough questions. Durbin is reduced to decrying the evils of profits and other vacuous “arguments”. An enlightening post.
4:19 pm [ Quote ]
Senator Turbin Durbin at it again.
Amazing how you libs keep electing morons like Durbin, Kennedy, Kerry, Pelosi, and Boxer.
4:44 pm [ Quote ]
What doublespeak nonsense from Durbin.
On one hand he says we told the Republicans we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 40%. On the other hand he says ANWR and off-shore drilling are off limits for environmental reasons.
Excuse me, my head is about to explode from listening to this monumental stupidity.
4:47 pm [ Quote ]
Sadly the GOP proposal just put out is no better than what the Dems were proposing. In many instances its worse.
4:50 pm [ Quote ]
it is a much see or a must see interview?
4:53 pm [ Quote ]
The tax increases do suck, but the bottom line is supply-demand laws. Like Cavuto pointed out, with emerging economies in two of the largest countries in the world, with limited refinery capacity being hit by hurricanes in the Golf, with violence in the mid east threatening the supplies of most of the world… duh, we’re gonna see a price hike.
I was skeptical of that $0.09 per gallon profit cited as well… I’m gonna look into that.
4:58 pm [ Quote ]
Durbin wants to tax the oil companies for what, making money? That doesn’t sound correct to me. If I was Exxon, and as an oil company, if I were to be taxed further for making money, I would be furious! They can’t do that, it isn’t fair to the person making fair profits. That’s destroying out freedom of capitalism. Besides, if you really feel that oil companies are making too much money and gouging, as to what the wrongly some would call “unfair”, spend your money else where then. Instead you could use that money for a ridiculously expensive and cheaply made hybrid, a bicycle, or a scooter. You vote with your money; expensive gas or an expensive hybrid. And if everyone were to go that path,—purchasing an expensive hybrid—Toyota would become even wealthier,—then Durbin will want to tax them for profiting largely—surely another competitor will come on the market to sell oil lower. If Durbin understood the philosophy of the country he is serving for politically, then maybe a Democrat would get something done in the Senate once in a while.

Record profit is recor profit, no matter if you make it $100 at a time or 0.09 cents at a time. No one seems to care that these record profits are helped by ENORMOUS incentives and tax breakes given to big oil. Jokes on you American tax payer! Did you like giving part of your paycheck to that Exxon guy that just got 400 MILLION!? I DID!
5:09 pm [ Quote ]
This Taliban DUrbin guy is a total moron.
I live in MI and the roads here SUCK.
So I’m paying the 50 cents/gal for roads to alleviate congestion…
What a jagoff, I’d LOVE to know what he drives. My guess he has a gaggle of big heavy SUVs to cart his lying leftist ass around.
5:15 pm [ Quote ]
I would agree with Keith that corporate welfare should end period, but particularly when the company is OBVIOUSLY doing fine on it’s own. Out of curiousity, before hurling accusations, does anyone know how much money Exxon received this past year in government bones?
That $400 million was also provided to the CEO by the stockholders of the company. It’s not like he just took whatever he could get his hands on. If the stockholders didn’t think he was worth that much in retirement, they wouldn’t have given it to him. Obviously they thought otherwise. Maybe it had something to do with Exxon’s record return over the last 12 years of 500%.

Durbin does come across as a total ignorant asshole.

50 cents each gallon in TAX to GOVERNMENT, 9 cents a gallon for Oil Industry PROFIT
The Congress (Guys like Jackass DURBIN) are bleeding the country dry
And Jackass DURBIN says the Oil Industry is is ripping us OFF ….WHAT an Idiot
! 50cents to TAX, 9 cents for profit…do the math DURBIN you jerk….

Big problem is lack of supply (partly due to Democrat policies… like no new refineries, no new production… I mean, what do they expect?) and increased demand (China, India).
So, supply is restricted while demand is increasing… guess what… the law of supply and demand (a far truer and more universal law than any written by man) indicates prices go up… which reduces demand, keeping them in line.
Otherwise, you run out of oil and gas.
Hello, Jimmy Carter.

[...] There is an interesting video of Senator Durbin appearing on Your World with Neal Cavuto over at Expose the Left. It’s a good example of why nothing is getting done, and nothing is going to get done about this. The biggest problem, really, is supply and demand, and whether you like it or not, that’s a market issue and one the government can’t really do a lot about, but even within the things that can be controlled, there is more interest in blaming the other party for the problem than in addressing what to do now. Some of the inconsistencies of Durbin’s position include… [...]

Keith(#11) do you have ANY grasp of the difference between profit and profit margin? From your post the answer is obvious. Read and educate yourself. The gov’t makes 4-6 times more $$$ on a gallon of gas than the oil companies do. THERE is your price gouging

According to the the bush administration and their calcualations of all the known oil reserves in the US and we drilled all of them and used up all the oil they had over 20 years, it still would not be enough for just the increase that the bush admin projected when they first took office. that also includes oil in alaska and national parks.
6:52 pm [ Quote ]
We should just nationalize the oil companies and screw the conservatives.
6:58 pm [ Quote ]
We are getting hammered with environmental restrictions on all fronts.
With the summer, your talking ethanol which may be more of a problem than oil. Of course oil is up to $70+ a barrel which has something to do with it.
We could ease the coming storm by removing some environmnetal bullcrap restrictions, and removing some if not all of that government tax.
Which side is going to do it, and which side is going to block it.

So stomptheirass, lets just do nothing like you libs want to do…..except raise taxes. Just leave the oil in the ground. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Justthink, do as your name implies. Ever heard of corporate wealfare? do you have any idea how much money big oil gets in incentives and tax breaks? You have no problem with them diping into your paycheck while they make record profits? Jokes on you!
By the way, gas tax pays for the roads you drive on. Corporate wealfare helps pay for the jets big oil flies in to go cash in their 400 million retirement package. Poor companies, they need our help!

Federal Gov’t price gouging
11:06 pm [ Quote ]
I like how the Senator was constantly interupted by Neil while he was making a point, but whenever the Senator tried to do the same to Neil he just yelled, “Let me finish!”
Anyway, I don’t care if they are taxed 50 cents a gallon and get 9 cents per gallon for profit. Something is wrong when a country is in an “oil crisis” and an company can make record profits. If a country is in that sort of situation, the profits of the company should report the same. Their may be a bit of a boost due to the increased demand, but setting a record for highest quarterly profits during an “oil shortage” is just outragous.
11:07 pm [ Quote ]
Take a deep breath justthink,
Like I said it does not matter if you make your record profits, 100 at a time or 0.09 at a time. It’s still RECORD profits. You do not understand the argument you are trying to make. If they made 0.009 cents a gallon and made only a thousand dallars you would have a point. What, do you feel sorry for them or something because their per gallon proffit is 0.09 cents? It does not matter! Do you know how manny gallons they sell every day? They make off like bandits! If 10 billion people gave me 1 penny would you feel sorry for me? You can give them some of your paycheck while they laugh if you want to, but I dont.

Keith, you asked “do you have any idea how much money big oil gets in incentives and tax breaks?”
The answer is, “No, I don’t”. Do you? Until you can find me this answer, stop the whining. You can’t just claim they get tax payer dollars without showing how much they get and how it was given (tax breaks, corporate welfare, incentives, etc.).
Also, they received that $400 million to give the retiring CEO through their profits, likely over the past decade.
And as a side note, does anyone know how much money Exxon, their employees and their leaders donate to charities and universities per year? I’ll give you a hint: it’s a LOT!
10:37 am [ Quote ]
Has anyone pointed out that it is stupid just too charge oil companies with more taxes, because that will just cause them to raise their prices more.
Also a price ceiling will cause a shortage.
Anyways, on the subject of $400 million, yes it is stupid that he got that much, however that is what the company was willing to pay him. Would anyone on this board say “no give me less money”, i think not.
12:20 pm [ Quote ]
Gas tax has ALWAYS exceeded oil company profits, which means the gov’t makes almost twice as much profit as oil companies. The gov’t should lower the tax prices on gas, but they won’t.
The Democrats want windfall tax profits to penalize the oil companies.. This might sound great, but just remember, those taxes will be passed along to the consumer, and gas prices WILL GO HIGHER.. IT WILL NOT LOSER THE PRICE OF GAS, and the GOV’T WILL ONLY MAKE MORE OF A PROFIT!!.IT’S THE GOVERNMENT THAT’S DOING THE TAX GOUGING, NOT THE OIL COMPANIES!!

Just to give you some information about how much gas taxes are and WERE previously…
Source: American Petroleum Institute, Tax Foundation.
Today, the combined burden of federal, state and local gas taxes costs American drivers an average of 45.9 cents on every gallon purchased. As Figure 2 illustrates, in some states the combined taxes exceed 60 cents for every gallon purchased. According to data on gasoline use from the U.S. Department of Transportation, that amounts to an annual gas tax burden of roughly $271 for every man, woman and child in the United States. In these times of concern over high gas prices, American consumers should remember that gasoline taxes have a significant impact on the amount they spend at the pump.
