BURBANK, Calif.—August 31, 2005—In response to the hurricane tragedy, NBC Universal Television Group will air a live benefit special, “A Concert For Hurricane Relief,” in high-definition on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC on Friday, September 2, 2005 at 8:00pm (ET), it was announced today by NBC Universal.

The hour-long, music and celebrity driven broadcast will air live to the East Coast, tape delayed on the West. The telethon, hosted by NBC’s Matt Lauer, will be broadcast entirely from the New York studios of NBC located in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The special will feature performances by artists with ties to the affected areas, including Tim McGraw, Harry Connick, Jr. and Wynton Marsalis as well as an appearance by Leonardo DiCaprio, among others.

Shepard Smith is reporting that no one knows where go to get buses or food and water. He interviewed people who are just coming out of their houses for the first time to seek help and refuge. The people Shep interviews say they just need to be pointed in the right direction, that’s all they want. The video shows folks loitering on the highways because they don’t know what to do. Shep puts the human face on the devastation in New Orleans.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Nearly 700 Iraqi Shi’ites died in a stampede over a Baghdad bridge provoked by rumors of a suicide bomber on Wednesday, and an official said the death toll was expected to reach 1,000.

The swarming crowds had been heading to a religious ceremony at the Kadhimiya mosque in the old district of north Baghdad when someone shouted there was a suicide bomber among them, a police source said.

“Hundreds of people started running and some threw themselves off the bridge into the river,” the source said.

“Many elderly died immediately … but dozens drowned, many bodies are still in the river and boats are working on picking them up.”

This news probably won’t get much lead way on the cable news channels since the wrath of Hurricane Katrina is the top priority to report on. However, this is one of the biggest stories to come out of Iraq in months (if not years). This is the most people to die at once since the beginning of the war.

Brett Favre, a Mississippi native and current resident held a press conference a few minutes ago. Even though Favre is one of the most popular football stars of all time, I think he speaks for everyday people who are suffering from the wrath of Katrina. What a down to earth guy.
