Willie Nelson Turns 72, Denied Portion of Highway Named After Him

Happy Birthday Willie. Say Anything gives him a nice present.

But what some of you may not know …

A state legislator had proposed naming a 49-mile stretch of Texas Highway 130 being built around Austin in honor of the Texas country music singer.

But two Republican senators, Steve Odgen of Bryan and Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio, said they didn’t want Nelson’s name on the road that crosses their districts, citing the musician’s fondness for drinking and smoking, and active campaigning for Democratic candidates.

“It’s frustrating, and sad in a way, but at this point, there is no reason to make this an unpleasant experience for anyone, especially Willie, so I’ll take no further action on the bill,” said state Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos, an Austin Democrat and the bill’s author.

I don’t see what the hell is the problem here. Who cares about his politics and what he believes in, he is freaking Willie Nelson for crying out loud. Hopefully some of my detractors will now see I am not some uber neo con, defending everything that Republicans believe in.

    Good for you!

Denying him the piece of highway is asinine.

Do people in Houston listen to Rush Limbaugh? Wasn’t he a “Hillybilly Heroin” addict?

Personally, I think these type of honors should only be handed to dead people. Then I’ll be all for driving down the stretch of Willie Nelson Highway. Until then, leave it alone.

And yes, I was against all the Reagan naming stuff that was going on before his death. Just as I’m against a Jimmy Carter sub and a George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier.

TLA, is “hillybily heroin” the best you can come up with? BTW, if you weren’t so high on your high horse, you would realize the story was about Austin and San Antonio, not Houston.

Willie is a icon which brings happiness and joy through music and entertainment. He does a lot for farmers and made a album for Tusami Relief. He has employed the same band menbers for over 30 years and considered them family.
He’s solid as a rock and soft as a loving father can be…......
I think the senator who nominated Willie for the Highway should re nominate and keep nominating
him…someday he’ll be proud that he did. Its just a matter of time sooner or later Willie will have a highway..cuz there isn’t too much he hasn’t been able to accomplish even though some of its been difficult
willie does everything from love so it’ll come when its suppose to0….............

Give him the street, the suburb, the city. He’s a true freak. When those Reps. wake up in their eternally black sleep, it will be too late, so give Willie his due now. Music is systematically exploited by politicians in the fanfare, but most couldn’t hum a tune let alone whistle along. I’m going to be sick.
